What is a darkroom?
A darkroom is a darkened area in clubs, bars or cruising spaces that deliberately offers little light to enable discreet encounters and anonymity. Contours are blurred here, glances are often enough to signal interest, and many people enjoy the mixture of mystery and excitement. Darkrooms are used for sexual acts – depending on the establishment – from kissing to sexual intercourse. In the BDSM scene, darkrooms are also often referred to as “playrooms”.
Typical features of darkrooms
- Dim light or black light: only discreetly illuminated contours or UV lamps create a mysterious atmosphere.
- Separate niches: Corners, booths or sitting or standing areas separated by curtains offer space for private moments.
- Volume & music: Bass-heavy beats mask noises and thus protect privacy.
